Located in downtown Fort Collins, the City of Fort Collins Office Building is the crown-jewel of the Fort Collins Civic Center master plan. The three-story office building is based upon great historic civic architecture that incorporates the surrounding environment and is unique within itself. Located next to a central plaza, which offers sunny and shady seating areas and unique landscaping, the City of Fort Collins Office Building will be a landmark for years to come. The 80,000 square-foot building is built around a masonry column module which sets up a rhythm of glass on the exterior. Daylighting, solar heating, and indigenous plant use were all parts of the 'green' building design utilized to make efficient use of natural resources. A well-defined main entry provides visibility and functionality to the building and the entry lobby acts as the building's center, while a service entrance allows free entry and exit of city employees. The building provides functional parking spaces, which reinforces a logical flow of access for pedestrians and vehicles alike.

The Enivornmental Protection Agency relocated their National Enforcement Investigations Center into the Denver Federal Center Building 25. To accommodate these state-of-the-art laboratories and offices, the interior was gutted; asbestos, lead and contaminated materials removed. Two bays of floor and roof were demolished, creating the focal point space for a two-story daylighted atrium.

In keeping with EPA’s mission, mechanical systems were replaced for energy efficiency and user health and comfort. Old single pane steelmullion windows were replaced with energy saving tinted insulated glass with thermal break frames, and exterior masonry walls were insulated to conserve energy.

OZ Architecture was commissioned to program and design a new three-building campus for the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) in Lakewood, Colorado. The project includes a 130,000 square-foot office building for 380 people and brings together ten divisions of DOT to create a more secure and efficient working environment. A 390-space parking structure, a 19,000 square-foot warehouse, and space for future development are also included on this 13-acre site. An innovative project delivery method afforded DOT control over the design of the campus, while establishing a firm lease rate early in the design process. High ceilings, sun shades, light shelves, and high-performance glazing are employed to create a comfortable, productive, and LEED-certified energy efficient environment, while taking advantage of striking views of downtown Denver.

Glenwood Springs' goal for this facility was the creation of a new City Hall housing ten departments, some with complex programmatic requirements. In a design/build competition, OZ Architecture was awarded the design commission and our team was charged with delivering an efficient building, meeting program demands and creating a welcoming civic presence for the community all within the city's stated budget. The design process had the additional challenge of meeting the requirements of the established design guidelines of the Downtown and Historic District, and OZ/Etkin-Skanska achieved all of the city's goals through a multi-step process. OZ first developed a space program for each city department, where every space was analyzed for efficiency to ensure that redundant program items could be eliminated or combined. Understanding budget constraints, the approach to design revolved around delivering a simplified floor plan to obtain structural and construction efficiencies, and the final space plan capitalized on shared conference facilities organized off a common circulation spine. OZ then developed a hierarchy of material placement - highest quality materials, such as brick and local sandstone, were located where they would be most appreciated by the public. Our design also included a new civic plaza joining the new City Hall, County Detention Facility and County Courthouse. With all the design elements and landscaping complete, the new Glenwood Springs City Hall will successfully stand as a civic anchor in the downtown area for decades to come.

This 4-1/2-story city government building houses approximately 1,100 employees and was designed with users in mind. The facility includes a 3,500 square foot Childcare Center with an outdoor play area, a community room, a cafeteria with an outdoor deck, a client caf?, a Family Visitation Center, offices, and a computer center. The design goal was to avoid the "institutional" feel of a government building. Bright colors, bold patterns, large murals, modern workstations, wide hallways, large waiting areas, and the use of natural lighting, all help achieve a professional but warm community-supportive atmosphere.

Returning to firehouse design that creates a civic presence and a neighborhood landmark, OZ Architecture designed this new facility to serve 32 firefighters and a district chief. Located in the Stapleton Redevelopment Area, this traditionally-styled station - the city's first in 20 years to feature traditional red-brick firehouse architecture with arches and a 75-foot tower - relates to the contemporary commercial development in the area as well as the residential neighborhood. The 75-foot tower, about twice as high as a traditional firehouse tower, is functional and will be used for rappelling exercises and other firefighter training. Unusual for an urban setting, the station's pull-through design enhances pedestrian safety while decreasing response time. Incorporating state-of-the-art, energy-saving techniques, durable, long lasting, maintenance-free green materials were used throughout the facility. The station includes three bays, a public zone facing North with a meeting room that neighbors can reserve and a private zone surrounding an interior courtyard for natural daylight and privacy.
