The primary design objectives for the six-building Bear Creek Apartments was to provide housing for 1900 students on an existing satellite campus and to provide a sense of community that bridges the architecture of the existing modernist towers with that of the Tuscan-style main campus. OZ utilized the materials of the existing towers (brick), while emulating the massing and detailing of the main campus in a more contemporary manner. To relieve the mass, the two buildings rise up to six stories at the center, stepping down to three stories at the ends of the wings. Stone accents reinforce entry points and enliven the fa?ade, while the wings form courtyards that provide outdoor gathering places and encourage pedestrian use. The architecture and site structure are inextricably linked, so that spaces formed by the buildings are positive and inviting. Taken together, the architecture and landscape form a memorable living environment for the residents.

OZ developed a space use program and building design for Colorado Mountain College’s newest building in Breckenridge, Colorado. The Town of Breckenridge designated a highly visible 20 acre site north of the historic Breckenridge down town along the Blue River and Highway 9. The challenge was to develop a creative, functional building design that met the expectations and desires of the College but also met Town’s desire for “quality” architecture that would signify the northern “entry” to the Town.

The Speed and Strength Room at the Dal Ward Center was modified to open the room to the fantastic mountain views and accommodate the Heisman and other trophies won by CUs athletic teams. OZ also helped the University solve an acoustical issue in the weight room by designing a new impact platform. This project was donated to the University by Shaw Construction and OZ Architecture.

The Lory Student Center represents the hub of the student dining experience on the Colorado State University campus. OZ's challenge was to create a livelier, more engaging and more up-to-date image for the center, while staying within a closely-defined budget and schedule. When the project was completed in December of 2003, the total square footage equalled 18,500 and the project cost totaled $1.9 million. The existing facility was dark and outdated, with a food service facility that needed to be remodeled to include five franchises instead of the existing scramble system. The client also wanted to integrate the greenhouse at the far end with the main dining areas in the interior of the facility. The dining areas were designed to offer a variety of creative options and environments within the space. A fireplace was added to bring in warmth and a feeling of hospitality. Fresh colors and patterns were added to further enliven the atmosphere. Special consideration was given to traffic flow, queuing and circulation throughout.

Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine is currently under constructionin the Town of Parker - Douglas County, Colorado that will attract students and faculty from around the world.OZ Architecture was retained to create a new university campus where the buildings surround lush courtyards and pathways creating an inviting atmosphere for higher learning. It is fundamentally important to the proposed development that the common areas relate and engage the outdoors, both visually and functionally, while still maintaining proper security controls. Classroom and lecture halls will be designed to incorporate the latest medical education practices and theories. State-of-the-art audio-visual equipment and technology will be installed to maximize learning capacity. In addition, wireless capacity will exist throughout the entire facility with multiple work/study areas for students. Sustainable practices will be followed including the use of natural light and energy efficiency. Phase One-135,000 GSF, the first building of this proposed new campus will provide the design direction the University will implement for the future creation of the entire campus. Phase One will be designed with the flexibility for multi-use and accommodations for change. Phase One has a slated completion date of September 2008. Future space needs will be driven by student enrollment with facilities for staff, lecture halls, lab and common areas. It is projected that the university will include a College of Nursing and a College of Dentistry to accommodate future interest and enrollment. Additionally, administrative, childcare, and fitness facilities will be incorporated to assist in Rocky Vista's overall quest to provide an atmosphere conducive to effective learning, health, and well-being. *Currently under Construction

This recent  21,000, $2M sf remodel to the University of Colorado’s primary Student Center focused on improved food service functionality, associated income stream, and importantly, the dining experience.   In bringing new life to the Alferd packer Grill at CU’s University Memorial Center, this project specifically dramatically improved the circulation and flow of the food service area, and created a new bakery and coffee shop identity for  Baby Doe’s.

This project was a student-funded project that gave us the opportunity to become sensitive, true stewards of the students’ funds and the sacrifices they’ve made for themselves and future students.

The project incorporates many sustainable principles to improve operations costs, energy efficiency, and highlights the use of recycled materials to express to all users the University’s goals of environmental stewardship.
Area: 21,180 sf
