Situated to maximize views of the Front Range on one of the original homesteads in the Boulder Valley, the 49-acre site chosen for Boulder Community Foothills Hospital had remained in agricultural use for over 100 years. OZ Architecture was retained to design this facility to fulfill many goals, but most specifically, to create a facility to nurture the health-related needs of Boulder County's women and children in a resort-like environment. To achieve this, medical equipment and nursing stations recede into the background as local art adorns walls and niches, and the pediatric unit provides a camp-like setting to help reduce apprehension. Twinkle-stars light the corridor ceiling at night and colorful porches and murals mark entrances to the children's cabins. A three-sided courtyard, outdoor seating, and nature walk areas foster healing of patients and visitors alike. Acknowledging evidence that patients heal more quickly with the support of their families, all patient rooms accommodate overnight visitors. Parents may remain overnight during their child's hospital stay and a state-of-the-art Special Care Nursery provides both a private room for newborns requiring prolonged medical attention and an adjoining room for the infant's parents. Included services are labor and delivery, neo-natal intensive care and pediatrics. The facility also houses an emergency room, a surgery department and a full imaging department. Native Colorado materials were used for the structure as well as the building fa?ade, and wherever practical, products and manufacturers were selected within a 500-mile radius. Many of the products incorporated recycled material, and 64% of jobsite construction waste was recycled. The hospital achieved a Silver Rating under the LEED 2.0 Program, becoming the first hospital in the country to receive LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Located in downtown Fort Collins, the City of Fort Collins Office Building is the crown-jewel of the Fort Collins Civic Center master plan. The three-story office building is based upon great historic civic architecture that incorporates the surrounding environment and is unique within itself. Located next to a central plaza, which offers sunny and shady seating areas and unique landscaping, the City of Fort Collins Office Building will be a landmark for years to come. The 80,000 square-foot building is built around a masonry column module which sets up a rhythm of glass on the exterior. Daylighting, solar heating, and indigenous plant use were all parts of the 'green' building design utilized to make efficient use of natural resources. A well-defined main entry provides visibility and functionality to the building and the entry lobby acts as the building's center, while a service entrance allows free entry and exit of city employees. The building provides functional parking spaces, which reinforces a logical flow of access for pedestrians and vehicles alike.

The Enivornmental Protection Agency relocated their National Enforcement Investigations Center into the Denver Federal Center Building 25. To accommodate these state-of-the-art laboratories and offices, the interior was gutted; asbestos, lead and contaminated materials removed. Two bays of floor and roof were demolished, creating the focal point space for a two-story daylighted atrium.

In keeping with EPA’s mission, mechanical systems were replaced for energy efficiency and user health and comfort. Old single pane steelmullion windows were replaced with energy saving tinted insulated glass with thermal break frames, and exterior masonry walls were insulated to conserve energy.

OZ Architecture was commissioned to program and design a new three-building campus for the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) in Lakewood, Colorado. The project includes a 130,000 square-foot office building for 380 people and brings together ten divisions of DOT to create a more secure and efficient working environment. A 390-space parking structure, a 19,000 square-foot warehouse, and space for future development are also included on this 13-acre site. An innovative project delivery method afforded DOT control over the design of the campus, while establishing a firm lease rate early in the design process. High ceilings, sun shades, light shelves, and high-performance glazing are employed to create a comfortable, productive, and LEED-certified energy efficient environment, while taking advantage of striking views of downtown Denver.

This state-of-the-art elementary school serves 450 students in its 62,000 square feet of space. OZ teamed with BOORA Architects of Portland, Oregon, to create a cutting-edge design with respect to both functionality and sustainability. The two-story building takes advantage of exceptional Rocky Mountain views and maintains a compact volume, adding to the building's energy efficiency. Using life-cycle costing, high-performance strategies and environmentally-friendly materials and equipment, the team created an energy-efficient facility that the school district believes will last 100 years and cost half the standard energy costs annually.

Returning to firehouse design that creates a civic presence and a neighborhood landmark, OZ Architecture designed this new facility to serve 32 firefighters and a district chief. Located in the Stapleton Redevelopment Area, this traditionally-styled station - the city's first in 20 years to feature traditional red-brick firehouse architecture with arches and a 75-foot tower - relates to the contemporary commercial development in the area as well as the residential neighborhood. The 75-foot tower, about twice as high as a traditional firehouse tower, is functional and will be used for rappelling exercises and other firefighter training. Unusual for an urban setting, the station's pull-through design enhances pedestrian safety while decreasing response time. Incorporating state-of-the-art, energy-saving techniques, durable, long lasting, maintenance-free green materials were used throughout the facility. The station includes three bays, a public zone facing North with a meeting room that neighbors can reserve and a private zone surrounding an interior courtyard for natural daylight and privacy.

The Nature Conservancy of Colorado Headquarters Building is the commercial centerpiece of the Iron Flats mixed-use development in Boulder. It is located between the historic Whittier residential neighborhood, a busy commercial district, and a public park. The design was intended to combine traditional elements with more contemporary components in a harmonious way. Another challenge/opportunity for this building was to provide the level of environmental consideration demanded by a client such as The Nature Conservancy. The extensive use of natural exterior materials like stone, brick, rusted metal panels, cement fiberboard panels and wood reflect an image consistent with this organization.

The Viceroy Resort, located in Building 13A, will be approximately 154 unit condo hotel with approximately 154 guestrooms. The Viceroy Residences, located in Building 13B, will contain approximately 40 fractional units. The balance of the facility will include a 125 seat restaurant, a 75 seat bar, 5,000 sf of meeting and banquet space, 5,000 sf of spa area and a 1,000 sf fitness center. The condo hotel will have five unit types with approximately 30 variations to the plans. The fractional building will have five unit types and approximately 17 variations to the plans. In order to reduce the mass of the structure, The Viceroy Resort's design was broken into two parts, building 13A and 13B. These two buildings will be connected by a covered, indoor walkway with direct access to the outdoor pool terrace. Some of the design elements used included a stone base, that matches the indigenous stone of the surrounding mountain peaks, and large expanses of glass combined with steel roof brackets, which gives the building a ?Modern Mountain? feel.
