Rio Tinto Minerals

, AK

Rio Tinto Minerals (RTM) is the worlds largest producer of salt, boron and talc in the world. When they decided to merge two existing subsidiaries US Borax and Luzenac America and relocate the world headquarters to the Denver area, OZ was hired to create a LEED certified facility for them. The project, which moves the two firms into an existing 100,000 sf speculative office building, presents many challenges. First two significantly different business cultures must be blended, honoring attributes of each while creating a new culture for the new combined entity. Second, both firms US Borax being boron producers and Luzenac being talc producers have significant laboratory functions that research new uses for their products. Over 40,000 sf of the RTM facility is lab and lab related functions. Fitting a basic office building for these uses presents a significant investment on the part of RTM and many challenges in design and function for the OZ design team. OZ combined our in house expertise in lab design; office design and LEED design to give RTM a team that could handle these significant challenges.
