Gateway Environmental Education Center
Staten Island, NYDesigned while contracted with the National Park Service for services throughout the United States, the Gateway Environmental Education Center is rooted in the landscape of the shoreline between dunes and upland woods on Staten Island, NY. Sustainable design practices were an important goal of the client's - included passive solar orientation and shading, berming, and the use of natural and non-toxic building materials. Energy and cost savings were enhanced by using recycled metal roofing and cast-in-place concrete walls, and a focus on simple architecture detailing allowed the National Park Service to save additional costs.
