The Argyle

Denver, CO

Argyle Park Square Inc. is a non-profit organization providing housing for the elderly at below-market rates. The Continuing Care Retirement Community is located in a northwest Denver residential area and contained on a full city block of approximately three acres. One of the buildings is a historically significant structure built in 1899 that had numerous additions which did not meet present building codes. OZ Architecture designed an entirely new facility for assisted-living and nursing care that incorporated the restored facade. Construction proceeded in two successive phases to allow continuous occupation without relocating any residents off-site. Many of the original interior elements such as fireplace mantels, stairs and cabinetry were saved and reused in the new facility. These units meet current handicapped elderly guidelines, while retaining the flavor of the original building. Roof slopes, overhangs, and exterior finishes blend with the facade, while interior finishes and details were modeled on the pre-existing building. The original entry court was retained and the 2nd-floor porch was restored, and a new cloistered garden was created that is central to many of the activity spaces including the dining room. The new facility provides 109 assisted-living units and 60 nursing beds in a two and three story structure. Both resident rooms and ancillary spaces provide greatly improved facilities designed to incorporate ADA and elderly guidelines. The common space has been designed to incorporate an antique fireplace mantel and a wall mirror that graced the original Argyle Parlor. Residents congregate in one of the many informal gathering places that is furnished with original antiques and artwork.
