U.S. Forest Service National Design Guidelines
, COThe Built Environment Image Guide (BEIG) has been instrumental in the implementation of the U.S. Forest Service's mission to enhance the quality of Forest Service facilities by being the guide for future design of the built environment on all Forest Service land throughout the U.S. OZ developed new design guidelines, including architecture, site planning, and landscape, as well as graphic and sustainable design. Week-long interactive workshops were held for each of the five U.S. Forest Service regions to address natural and cultural context and sustainable design strategies appropriate to each region. The BEIG addresses not just aesthetics but environmental costs, energy use, and waste products. For example, the BEIG recommends recycling buildings, using recycled materials in new construction and employing alternative energy sources. The BEIG also calls for healthier workplaces and visitor areas that enjoy natural light and scenic vistas.
